Chautauqua Week

The Flying Karamazov Brothers were born on April 23, 1973 at a renaissance fair in northern California. Their vast theatre credits are too numerous to list. Oh, ok. Besides having played in 5 of their own Broadway and 2 Off Broadway Shows over the years they have shared stages and screens collaborating with Frank Sinatra, Placido Domingo, The Grateful Dead, The Who, Dolly Parton, Robin Williams, Patrick Dempsey, Danny DeVito, Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, Ken Kesey, Allen Ginsberg, Kenny Rogers, Los Lobos, The Smothers Brothers, Click and Clack the Tappett Brothers, Joyce Brothers and many, many, more. They have appeared on TV shows including “Late Show with David Letterman,” "Seinfeld", "Ellen", "The Tonight Show", "The Today Show", “Good Morning America”, "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" and many others. They starred in the hit film The Jewel of the Nile. They have performed with the Cleveland Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, the St. Louis Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony, The Seattle Symphony, The Canadian National Symphony, the Toronto Symphony and many other orchestras. They won an Obie award in 1980 for their show, Juggling & Cheap Theatrics which played at the Goodman Theatre, Arena Stage, BAM, London’s West End and moved to Broadway and was taped for a television special on Showtime. And guess what, the troupe has been centered in Port Townsend since 1986! Paul Magid, aka Dmitri Karamazov lives here still. Paul was a co-founder of the New Old Time Chautauqua in 1981.

New Old Time Chautauqua thinks of Godfrey Daniels as one of our own. We’ve met his family and learned his ways. We’ve come to know what frustrates him and what makes him happy. We’ve seen him struggle and we’ve seen him succeed. What must it be like for an audience to meet him for the first time? A theater reviewer in LA saw him in a Variete show and said that his part “… was singularly the most charming part of the show. It was a Shel Silverstein poem brought to life.” If this year is your first Moisture Festival, if you are going to meet Godfrey Daniels for the first time … you are SO lucky, I wish I was you.

Amy Engelhardt made her Off-Broadway debut as composer/lyricist/vocal arranger of BASTARD JONES (with lyricist/librettist Marc Acito). The rock musical adaptation of Henry Fielding's TOM JONES, was an Off Broadway Alliance nominee for Best New Musical. BASTARD JONES was a Finalist for the Richard Rodgers Award and the Eugene O'Neill NMTC (twice) and was developed at Millikin University with a NAMT Writers' Residency Grant. At the cell theatre, leads Evan Ruggiero and Elena Wang were both Clive Barnes Award nominees (Evan won), and Evan garnered Drama Desk and Chita Rivera Award Nominations for his performance.

During her 14 years as a vocalist/primary writer/arranger with Grammy Noms The Bobs, she spearheaded the development of (and wrote music/lyrics) for the Bobs/Flying Karamazov Brothers collaboration, A COMEDY OF ERAS at ACT Seattle.

America’s Comedy calls Alex Stein “a masterful storyteller who peppers his tales with humor, soul, and a top-notch wit.”  His essay collection NO, MR. BOND, I EXPECT YOUR DREAMS TO DIE is available all over the world (and here tonight).  He’s also an award-winning documentary filmmaker and he produces the long-running weekly Muse Literary Salon show every Saturday night at “Muse on 8th”in Los Angeles.  His hobbies include fixing second-act problems in exchange for triple-crème cheese and standing in bars, coffee shops, and theaters telling stories of heartache, longing, and loss.

When not performing in the Pacific NW, Henrik has appeared on The Tonight Show starring Jay Leno, at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, and even did a guest spot on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion… yes a juggler on a radio show. Henrik’s latest claim to fame was appearing. not once, but twice, on the GONG show. And, tah dah, didn’t get gonged.

This startlingly inventive troupe juggles genres as easily as objects, weaving theatre, dance, physical comedy, and juggling into a creative and infectious entertainment experience. Based in Olympia Washington the Mud Bay Jugglers work their choreographic and juggling magic to lively music for a mesmerizing and emotional performance.

Since 1980, these master of levity - Doug Martin, Alan Fitzthum, and Harry Levine - have captivated audiences of all ages at theaters, universities, festivals and events through out the United States and Western Canada. About the only thing predictable about their constantly evolving material is that there will always be plenty of music and mirth - and lots of surprises. No wonder Jugglers World Magazine called them, "One of the most original and creative juggling troupes performing today."

Ty Vennowitz juggles jobs, tours around in a wheely big ring, and builds things like this website. With a degree in dance and a diploma in circus arts from the National Circus School in Montreal he’s over edumucated and wants you be too. He has toured China with L'Arsenal Musique, Canada with Cirque Jean Coutu, and the US with Acrobatic Conundrum. When he's not touring Ty enjoys teaching gymnastics and circus to kids of all ages here in the Rogue valley.

Maureen Monroe began her skyward exploration in 2012 when she moved to Ashland and became captivated by the beauty and athleticism of aerial circus arts. She is the director of the Levity performance company, and has toured with the New Old Time Chautauqua, the Acrobatic Conundrum and annually graces the stages of the Oregon Country Fair. Maureen also runs her own Pilates studio, Ashland Authentic Pilates.

Jason Webley is a troubadour based in Everett, Washington. Beginning as a street performer in late 90s, Webley built an international cult following for his songs and stories. Armed with an accordion, a guitar, a porkpie hat and a plastic vodka bottle full of pennies, he has performed in over forty countries and released a pile of records on his own Eleven Records label. In recent years, Webley has kept a lower profile, but new listeners continue to discover his music through his involvement with the Welcome to Night Vale podcast, and his collaborations with Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls. He currently captains a ramshackle floating circus called Flotsam!

The Unexpected Brass Band - Port Townsend's Funky New Orleans-style brass band -is an eccentric eclectic ensemble of odd balls and curmudgeons. This horn band with sole blows until the second shoe drops. If you want to dance your Asimov come see them at Chautauqua Week; A Dance Concert set on Friday, may 20 at Fort Worden and Saturday Night, May 21 in the New Old Time Chautauqua's BIG SHOW at the McCurdy Pavilion.

The medieval troubadour’s work consisted of entertainment and propaganda, praising the brave and ethical, mocking the hypocritical, teaching the uninformed, and maintaining the people’s spirits during times of oppression. Jim Page is a modern troubadour; his work is topical song-spinning with love, poignance, and reflection in his lyrics, and very, very fast guitar-picking. He is in the American musical lineage of topical singer-songwriters that includes Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs and Janis Ian, Bruce Springsteen and Frank Zappa.

Fiona Rose is a multi-disciplinary artist from Anchorage, Alaska. She performs regularly around town, most often as a musician, but also as a juggler, emcee, actress, and occasional burlesque performer. Her music and art draw audience members into the creation and performance of the story. She enjoys organizing a free, family-friendly variety show at the library called “Spenaudeville” as well as specialty events at Van’s Dive Bar.

Fiona was born in Anchorage, and grew up playing music, most notably flute. In 2011, she unexpectedly met up with a touring vaudeville production in Talkeetna, Alaska called the New Old Time Chautauqua. Within two hours, she found herself parading onto stage with the marching band; within two days, she had joined their caravan. Since "running away with the circus," she has continued to develop her art and community organizing skills around Alaska and beyond.

Born in Scotland, Kym writes stories, poetry and folk ballads laced with political satire, unvarnished truths, mystical clarity, family honesty and sly humor. Host of the Feisty Females—a collective of amazing West Coast female singer/songwriters—Kym sings stories alive, weaving characters from the highways and byways of our joyous and sometimes weary world with haunting melodies, fearless lyrics and a rich creamy voice that takes listeners into the heart of her musical musings. She seeks to embody the loving healer by practicing the arts of herbal magic, lymphatic drainage massage and Ayurveda. Kym hosts the weekly Feisty Females Radio Show at KOWS 107.3 fm (www.kows.fm) out of Occidental every Friday from 11am to 1pm, manages a stilting troupe (Diva Galactika), and produces all kinds of powerful events here and there as the CEO of Amazon Productions. Also known as Mamazon, Kym is the “way cool” mom of two extraordinary kids who inspire her to work and sing for environmental justice and peace every day.

When The New Old Time Chautauqua began in 1981 to take the Country Fair shows on tour around the Pacific Northwest, the Fighting Instruments of Karma went along as both marching and stage band.

The Band began in 1975 with "The Chumleighland March" by Carl Spaethe, expanded shortly thereafter into "The New Chumleighland March" by his alter ego Thaddeus Spae, which continues to be our theme march. FIKMCB/O play Sousa marches, other classic 19th and early 20th century marches, a version of "Teddy Bears' Picnic", Cumbias, Beatles tunes, a Bollywood Wedding March, a Mexican waltz, and has marched on Chautauqua from Washington to Alaska!


When The New Old Time Chautauqua began in 1981 to take the Country Fair shows on tour around the Pacific Northwest, the Fighting Instruments of Karma went along as both marching and stage band.

<h4>Sunday, May 22 | 5PM <span style="color: rgb(15, 15, 14);">| Littlefield Green</span></h4><p>The Chautauqua Community Congress is an experiment in community engagement.</p><p>Tribal Nations from around the Olympic Peninsula have been invited by our local government&nbsp;(City of Port Townsend &amp; Jefferson County Board of Commissioners) to participate in Chautauqua Week, culminating&nbsp;in a meaningful dialogue between representatives of local sovereign Tribal Nations, residents of Port Townsend, Jefferson County, and their elected officials.</p><p>We&nbsp;hope that through this direct and honest communication we may move&nbsp;closer to being in right relations with our tribal brothers and sisters as we work together to bring about tangible and systematic change.&nbsp;</p>

<p><img src="https://chautauqua.org/uploads/our.jpg"></p><h1>Our Chautauqua</h1><p>The New Old Time Chautauqua (NOTC) was founded in 1981 by a group of adventurous performers, health care practitioners, and educators including the Flying Karamazov Brothers and Dr. Patch Adams. The idea was to revive the inspiring Chautauqua spirit and bring live entertainment and educational workshops to diverse rural communities. With the intention of inspiring creativity and supporting community, our traveling troupe partners with local organizations and service groups to present Chautauqua events.</p><p>We aim to delight, educate, amaze, and provoke the imagination of adults and children alike. The all-volunteer 50+ person troupe has staged 2-6 week summer tours throughout California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Alaska and British Columbia. In Spring 2006, NOTC traveled to New Orleans and the coast of Mississippi bringing free entertainment and friendship to Hurricane Katrina survivors and volunteer relief workers.</p><p>In recent years we have toured Southeast Alaska, Washington State, Montana, Idaho, and Eastern Oregon.&nbsp;</p>

New Old Time Chautauqua

<p><img src="https://chautauqua.org/uploads/history.jpg"></p><h1>What is a Chautauqua?</h1><p>“Chautauqua” was a cultural and social movement that started in upstate New York in the 1870s and flourished until the mid 1920s. During this time, hundreds of touring chautauquas presented lectures, dance, music, drama, and other forms of “cultural enrichment”. In rural America, big tents served as temporary theaters for these productions. Lectures by author Mark Twain, suffragette Susan B. Anthony, or a production of “The Tale of Two Cities” are the kinds of entertainment one could expect at a chautauqua show. The Chautauqua Institution still thrives in Chautauqua, New York.</p><p>Teddy Roosevelt once called the traveling Chautauquas “the most American thing in America”. This form of live entertainment faded with the growing popularity of radio and motion pictures.</p><p>The Chautauqua Movement was the largest event that has ever existed in the US or Canada. Taking its cue from the proceeding Lyceum movement the first Chautauqua was held on idyllic Lake Chautauqua (hence the name) in 1874. Its mix of arts and entertainment became an instant hit. By the turn of the 20th century there were Chautauquas held one coast to the other. In 1904 the Chautauqua idea got on the rails and went mobile. Held in large brown tents Chautauquas were found in nearly every town in the country. Powered by its superstar speakers, international music stars, theatre, vaudeville, scientists, and politicians it had become a sensation. By 1924 a 1,000 Circuit or Traveling Chautauquas were playing in over 10,000 towns with an attendance of over 40,000,000 Americans. Teddy Roosevelt called Chautauqua, "The most American thing about America". Chautauquas were based on the idea that learning continued throughout life. The Chautauqua Movement's mix of education and entertainment was the predecessor of today's NPR, TED talks, and influenced modern journalism, television, and politics. Chautauquas were always set in an idyllic setting, among the trees, by a shore, or in a park (which is why this 2016 WSP summer is such a natural fit). When Chautauqua came to a town all normal activity stopped as each town's citizen's dedicated a week of their lives to learn, to be entertained, and to join in community.</p><p>The traveling Chautauquas disappeared during the Great Depression but the original Chautauqua continues to flourish on the shores of Lake Chautauqua.</p><p>"<a href="https://progrss.com/places/20170118/chautauqua-re-imagined/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(45, 183, 7);">Chautauqua: An American Institution Reimagined for the 21st Century</a>," by Marshall Gause on the website progrss, lays out both the history of Chautauquas and which ones are currently active around the U.S., including New Old Time Chautauqua.&nbsp;</p><p>CIRCUIT CHAUTAUQUAS IN WASHINGTON 1914-1930:</p><p>For a week every summer, from 1914 until 1930, Port Townsend, WA was invaded. All activities in Port Townsend and the countryside around were curtailed or reduced. The hotels began to fill up with strange people who had arrived by rail the night before.</p><p>Some of these strangers were people of note: politicians, lecturers, inventors, and educators. To this heady cast was added vaudevillians, divas, dancers, Native American Speakers, and actors. The local newspapers headlined the week-long program by printing the schedule on the front page with descriptions of each of the acts. It was the area’s biggest week of the year. What was it?</p><p>It was the Ellison-White Traveling Circuit Chautauqua and it was part of the national Chautauqua movement which had become the largest attended event in Washington State. In its heyday, the importance of Chautauqua Week in Port Townsend’s yearly cycle was right up there with Christmas, Easter, and the Fourth of July.</p><p>This year's May 20-22, 2022's "Chautauqua Week" is historic because, although Port Townsend has been the home and springboard for the New Old Time Chautauqua for 40(+1) years, this will be the first "Chautauqua Week" in the Key City (Port Townsend) in more than a century.</p><p><br></p><p><em>"What do you think when you hear the word Chautauqua? Do you know that the Chautauqua movement is directly fostered and supported by more personally interested business and professional men than any one world movement, either educational, social or political? Do you know that the Chautauqua movement has grown in thirty years from one assembly to over 5,000 assemblies? A limited number of bags will be available first come, first served on Saturday, Aug. 20, at HJ Carroll Park.</h6><p><br></p><p>Community Points of Distribution (CPODs) are sites where the public can pick-up life-sustaining emergency relief supplies following a disaster, and may also be utilized as a communications hub.&nbsp;</p><p>In 2020, All County Picnic began incorporating CPOD Training Exercises into our annual tradition of distributing free corn on the cob to picnickers. The more we know about our own capabilities and needs, and that of our neighbors, in advance of a crisis, the better we are able to respond efficiently and effectively. </span></p>

<h4><strong>PREPARE YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD</strong></h4><p>The ability to deal with a crisis is largely dependent on the relationships and systems developed before an emergency. Space Twins Provisions is a husband-wife vegetable operation in residency at White Lotus Farm & Inn. We furnish a small CSA and vend at the Port Townsend Farmers Market. On less than a quarter acre, we practice high rotation market gardening style vegetable production.
